Day & Night, a short animated film about acceptance

In the first scene in the short film Day & Night , we see a rooster gala, which represents the beginning of the morning. Immediately afterwards, the first character in the story, Dag, appears. He wakes up and begins his daily routine. But suddenly he meets the other character in the short film, Night, who sleeps peacefully.

Both Day and Night are very strange; different scenes and situations related to what usually happens during their time of day are reproduced in their bodies. In Day’s body we can see what happens during the day (dawn with the sun rising, a rainbow, fun on the beach, by the pool or on a meadow, etc.). On the contrary, in Nat’s body we can see what happens during the night (the moon rises, fireworks, fireflies, parties, etc).

We see that they are both completely different and polar opposites of each other, and because of this they do not understand each other and fight at first aggressively and violently.

But once they begin to open their minds and appreciate all the events that occur in each other, they begin to get along and have fun together. When the sunset comes, they become the same, with the same shade of orange. After that, they merge into one big hug. It makes the day become night and the night becomes day.

With this beautiful story, the creator of this short animated film, Teddy Newton from Pixar Animation Studios, invites us to reflect on the importance of accepting diversity. Due to the film’s basic way of conveying this message, it was nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 83rd Academy Awards and won the Annie Awards.

To accept diversity

In this animated short film, they show that we are often afraid of the unknown. Therefore, we sometimes have a hard time relating to new people, especially if we think they are different from us.

But as adults, we must make an effort and understand that this is nothing more than prejudice. In addition, it is good to meet many different people, with different tastes, ideas, opinions and thoughts. Only then can we grow and develop fully as human beings.

In addition, it is important to incorporate these civic and social values into our children from an early age and teach them the importance of inclusion. In other words, we must educate them to accept and respect diversity and to have empathy with everyone, to acknowledge the positive aspects of surrounding ourselves with different and special people.

Only in this way can they live in peace with all kinds of people. They learn to make the most of this enriching situation.
