Good night mom: why bedtime is the highlight of the day

Sometimes all our problems disappear in an instant, such as when we wish our children good night and see them fall asleep. No matter how stressful the day was or what you need to do tomorrow, you want to make sure your child is safe and well at bedtime. As simple as that.

There is no need to emphasize again that motherhood and the upbringing of children is complicated and challenging. You already know this. But in a way  , life becomes easier with children. It’s probably something you’ve already noticed.

Your child makes every fight worth the effort. It gives you a reason to move on every day. That’s all. As surprising as it may seem, this can actually improve your health and well-being. This is not something that should be underestimated.

According to a study from  the University of Finland , parents who do not know how to deal with stress risks risk transmitting these anxiety patterns to their children. And whoever contributes to this does not know how to appreciate the little things in life.

With this in mind, it is never a bad time to remember something simple, which you should tell yourself over and over again:  problems, daily pressure and anxiety should be left out of the home and beyond the reach of children.

When we talk to our little ones, they should feel that they are the highest priority and the root of our happiness.

Experts in family dynamics and couples therapy often give very simple advice:  we should never go to bed angry at our partners.

This should also apply to our children.

  • In many homes, bedtime can become a struggle and is often a source of outbreaks.
  • Our little ones often withdraw from leaving toys and games to go to bed. Sometimes parents have to  drag them to their room. When this happens, the day ends with negativity and that everyone is in a bad mood.

If this situation goes on day after day, bedtime has the potential to become something very dramatic when combined with stress from work and the like.

Instead, it should be one of those magical times of the day.

We know that opinions about the time children should go to bed differ, as do family routines. Some moms and dads come home late from work and do not want to miss an hour or two with their children.

These parents also need to spend time with their children. They need to hug them, ask how their day was and tell them how much they missed them. Each family has its norms, its internal dynamics that suit its characteristics and needs. But there are some basic guidelines that we can not dismiss.

As we mentioned above, these tips will help you ensure that bedtime leaves a better impression on your children.

A relaxed night

If your schedule allows, it is a good idea to establish a routine before bedtime. One hour before, turn off the TV and other electronic devices to relax.

  • A bath before bedtime  is always a good idea.
  • Put your children to bed and spare a few moments before you say goodnight. Talk about everything they have to say, laugh together or read a fairy tale.

This process should take place without quarrels and protests. If children get used to this routine from an early age, they will find it completely natural.

Bedtime is for talking about feelings, not worries

There are parents who say goodnight quickly and hurry away. If the child wants to talk, they say “it’s time to sleep now” or “mother is also tired”.

Of course you’re tired at this point in the evening. But  only a brief moment can etch itself in the children’s emotional memory. When we sit next to their beds and read a fairy tale, give them a promise, wish them good night or just sit quietly while they fall asleep. We watch over their dreams and enjoy their company after a stressful day.

Do not forget to enjoy these fleeting moments. Your children will not be children forever. It is important to be present and enjoy what is here and now.
